Elastic theory of pinned flux lattices.
The pinning of flux lattices by weak impurity disorder is studied in the absence of free dislocations using both the gaussian variational method and, to O(ǫ = 4 − d), the functional renormalization group. We find universal logarithmic growth of displacements for 2 < d < 4: 〈u(x) − u(0)〉2 ∼ Ad log |x| and persistence of algebraic quasi-long range translational order. When the two methods can be ...
متن کاملOptical flux lattices for ultracold atomic gases.
We show that simple laser configurations can give rise to "optical flux lattices," in which optically dressed atoms experience a periodic effective magnetic flux with high mean density. These potentials lead to narrow energy bands with nonzero Chern numbers. Optical flux lattices will greatly facilitate the achievement of the quantum Hall regime for ultracold atomic gases.
متن کاملSU(2) flux distributions on finite lattices.
We studied SU(2) flux distributions on four dimensional Euclidean lattices with one dimension very large. By choosing the time direction appropriately we can study physics in two cases: one is finite volume in the zero temperature limit, another is finite temperature in the intermediate to large volume limit. We found that for cases of β > βc there is no intrinsic string formation. Our lattices...
متن کاملElastic theory of flux lattices in presence of weak disorder
The effect of weak impurity disorder on flux lattices at equilibrium is studied quantitatively in the absence of free dislocations using both the Gaussian variational method and the renormalization group. Our results for the mean square relative displacements B̃(x) = 〈u(x)− u(0)〉2 clarify the nature of the crossovers with distance. We find three regimes: (i) a short distance regime (“Larkin regi...
متن کاملReaching fractional quantum Hall states with optical flux lattices.
We present a robust scheme by which fractional quantum Hall states of bosons can be achieved for ultracold atomic gases. We describe a new form of optical flux lattice, suitable for commonly used atomic species with ground state angular momentum J(g) = 1, for which the lowest energy band is topological and nearly dispersionless. Through exact diagonalization studies, we show that, even for mode...
